Part car, part truck and entirely different from everything else on the road, the 2001 PT Cruiser finally went on sale in March, 14 months after its coming-out party at the 1999 Detroit Auto Show.

The vehicle Chrysler says is "too cool to categorize" has the elements of a sedan, sport utility vehicle and minivan. It debuts with front-wheel drive, a $16,000 base price and a waiting list of nearly 300,000 consumers who have told the manufacturer they might want to buy one.

Chrysler says it can build only about 130,000 PT Cruisers this calendar year, and some of those will be exported. Demand for the PT Cruiser is expected to exceed supply and encourage dealers to charge more than suggested retail prices, which top out at about $21,000 for a fully loaded model.

The production Prowler's 3.5-liter V-6 delivers 253-horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque. The Howler packs the 4.7-liter V-8 currently used in Jeeps and Dodge trucks, which generates 250 horsepower but significantly higher torque, 300 pounds-feet. DaimlerChrysler cites a zero-to-60 time of 5.9 seconds and a 129-mph top speed.
The Howler retains the Prowler's two-seat convertible design and adds a cargo bed with a locking tonneau cover at the rear, creating a roadster pickup. The concept also has an aftermarket removable hardtop. To make room for the pickup bed, the rear-mounted four-speed automatic transaxle was replaced with a front-mounted Borg-Warner T5 manual transmission and a Dana 44 rear differential. A three-pedal assembly was borrowed from the Neon, because all Prowlers are automatics. While they were at it, engineers took advantage of the room left behind by the relocated transmission and enlarged the fuel tank, which, though enlarged for the Prowler's 2000 model year, is still a tad small, especially for a thirsty V-8.

The TRD Celica is named after its creator, Toyota Racing Development. The modifications are mostly a styling exercise and suspension upgrades. The TRD has ground effects, spoilers and a revised front grille and bumper with fog lamps. Performance shocks, struts, springs and sway bars comprise the suspension mods, along with special wheels and tires. Both the appearance and handling pieces from the TRD Celica will be available this spring for Celica owners.

The 500-horsepower Ultimate Celica was built with the help of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Toyota Racing Development and Rod Millen Motorsports. The bright-yellow car was designed by Calty stylists and sports a boxed-in rear wing and fairly bizarre front-end treatment said to emulate a Formula One car's nose and front suspension. All-wheel drive was deemed necessary to control the Millen-built engine derived from engines used in his Pike's Peak Hill Climb cars.
